Quick questions on upgrading PC memory via DIMMs

My Compaq PC (PC 2100, 266 MHz) supports up to 1 GB of DDR RAM. It has 2 DIMM slots. I bought a single 1 GB DIMM but before I open the package & start playing around w/ the PC, I'm wondering if this is even worth trying. Compaq's online documention seems to indicate that you divide the 1 GB system maximum by the 2 slots to come up w/ a maximum of 512 MB per slot (this is a general rule they list, not specific to my model).

If I can't use the 1 GB DIMM, I'll probably buy a 512 GB DIMM. If I do this, I would like to add my old 128 MB DIMM in slot 2 for a total of 640 MB. I do not know if this PC supports Dual Channel Mode ... if it does, it sounds like I'd lose a little performance by having mismatched DIMMs but is this worth caring about? I think I'd rather have more memory.

(Also, the RAM I bought is 333 Mhz, PC 2700, but I was told & have read that it should be backwards compatible to my system.)

Any thoughts before I give it a go?

2. http://www.crucial.com can be used to see if 1GB sticks are supported.

Yeah, that's the math for it. 1GB in 2 slots, that's 512MB per slot. So get a 512MB stick. DDR RAM should be compatable with PC2100.

How old is your PC? It sounds old if it only supports 1GB of RAM, so I don't think it is dual-channel. You can get CPU-Z (just google it) and post the northbridge chipset to make sure.

I assume you have read the other post. Keep in mind the going up to 512mb will improve performance. But going over 512 will not make as big a boost.
Dual DDR statred comming in with PC2700 and realy took of with PC3200 ram. There may be some PC2100 Dual boards, But I have just never seen one.
Dual DDR both sricks have to be the same size and speed.
But adding a 512mb stick should work. John
