Left mouse button no longer will open a Desktop shortcut

OS is XP on a Dell Dimension 4300

For years everything worked fine. Then, without any obvious notice, the left mouse button will no longer open a Desktop icon. I have to use Open under the right mouse button. To get to the Control Panel, I have to do Run: Control Panel. Interestingly, once I'm in the control panel, the left mouse button will work to launch selections there.

I'm using a Logitec RX-1500 mouse, which has a USB terminal but I run it thru an adaptor for the round plug-in. My Kensington mouse now has the same effect I describe above.

I have read of this problem before but never heard of the solution. Has anyone had this?

So you have the same result with USB input as Ps-2? I would wonder why you would run Ps-2 rather than USB.

The Dell PC has a PS-2 port on the back. Running the mouse, w/ USB terminal, thru an adaptor works. Using only the USB terminal and a USB port on the PC does not work. The only what this mouse will work w/ this PC is as I stated. The driver is PS/2.

USB 2.0

It sounds as if this is a pretty old system and may have issues which may or may not be hardware related. One thing to try would be to install an aftermarket PCI slot card, USB 2.0 to see if that doesn't resolve the issue.
