Canoscan canocan't scan, poss. driver issue?

I have a Canon Canoscan 5000f scanner. It suddenly developed a fault whereby it previews with a stripy dark/black preview. The scanning light is moving freely, and the light seems to be bright enough. I have checked the voltage coming out of the PSU and it is a stable 12.22v.
I have tried to update the driver by first downloading the Uninstall utility 1.240 which extracted to s500mux.exe. I have run the exe and selected my scanner type from the list, and a dialogue box popped up saying that it had uninstalled the driver. Then I downloaded ScanGear CS 8-0-2-1a. I have run the extracted executable 5000fvst8021a_xpen.exe. But when I have gone into Photostudio 5, clicked on acquire, and clicked in the top lefthand corner of the Scangear window, then clicked About Scangear CS, it shows as Version 220.127.116.11 for windows LLD1.06. So it appears not to have updated to the latest version i.e. 18.104.22.168a, and I still have the stripy dark/black preview issue.
I have seen others with this issue but have not seen them resolving it successfully.
