Canon Pixma MX870 Paper tray won't open

I have a wireless set up for my mx870 and my OS is Windows Vista Home Premium. Yesterday I attempted to print an online article; the first page printed, but a second blank sheet underneath, about an inch lower than the printed sheet, also came out. Occasionally this will happen, but has never posed a problem before.

This time, however, the printer stopped printing and an error message appeared on the LED--6_ _ _ (sorry, did not get the number). The rest of the mssg said to turn the printer off and turn it on again. That accomplished nothing.

The front paper tray is stuck now and will not pull out.

If I try to print anything (from the web or MS Word docs), everything appears to work normally, wireless lt flickers on the printer, seems to be communicating w/ wireless.

But then it never prints and nothing shows on the printer queue. Zero docs waiting.

Cannot say much for the Canon website in terms of suggestions or error messages, so trying my luck here.


Thanks for any suggestions! Up til now (I've had the printer a year and a half), it's worked great.

Nothing that I can see LOCKS the paper tray into place however if one didn't place it on a hard surface the tray could bottom out against what the printer sits on and make it feel stuck.

This is one heavy printer. Have someone help and lift up the printer while you try to slide out the paper tray.

Paper Tray Fix

Stand the Printer up on its back, you'll see to white pieces underneath that are guides for the tray. The one on the right is the culprit. Take the screw out, lift the piece out and flip it over. You will see the little spring loaded trigger. If you try sliding your finger up the guide rail leading to it and try to slide it by doing so you'll see it will not easily slide in. Take some sand paper to the spring loaded trigger piece. Hold it out with your other hand. I used a sand paper attachment on my Dremel set at 500rpm for more control on how much material I took off. Take the sharp angle off the piece until you can make the trigger slide in with your finger. Then take just a tad bit more off while smoothing the edges of the trigger so you don't have any more snags. Reinstall and enjoy your easy to open tray that will stay in the printer if moved from one location to the other.
