Need a new monitor, but confusion reigns

Okay, this is a question for the designers out there.
My old CRT is getting tired, and I want to get a newer monitor. All you find are LCDs of course. The problem is that on every monitor I've seen, smaller type -- such as in emails and on website menus -- does not display well. It appears that the LCDs don't interpolate the fine lines that make up the font elements well between the pixels.
I haven't found information from any source, live or online, as to what monitor(s) display fonts as well as a standard CRT. Since I do design work on my computer, I must have a monitor that displays type and its weight and spacing accurately. (And don't say get a Mac! I couldn't afford the transition.) I bought a 22" Dell Ultrasharp, which is supposed to be their high-end monitor, but had to return it due to this problem. (The return went very smoothly, btw -- great customer service.)
Someone must know the answer! Thanks!
