HP Installer can't find printer on LAN after reinstall

So the scenario goes like this. After a working install, my digital imaging monitor (part of the HP software package) got buggy and had to perform a reinstall. When I attemp reinstall, the installer package cannot find my printer on the network even when searching by IP or host name where it had no problem on the original install. Even more weird is that the HP firmware utility has no problem finding the printer. I have spent countless hours with HP tech support on this and nothing. We have tried booting with only MS services, level 3 uninstall, firewalls up, firewalls down, praying, etc. The ONLY workaround has been to perform a system recovery, but again, once installed you can never reinstall the software. It will find the printer via USB but never again on the network.
This has been an issue with installs on XP SP2, XP SP3, and on Vista SP1. This is for an OfficeJet Pro L7650
If ANYONE has any input it would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting really tired of performing system recoveries evertime this bloody software screws up. thanks
