HELP! Corrupted Files on External Hard Drive

A couple weeks ago, i turned on my computer and it said that one of my hard drives needed to be checked for consistency, its a Maxtor One-Touch, and when it checks it is says that all these file segments are unreadable and then the computer starts up. and when i went to open a folder on the drive it says its not accessible and the file or directory is corrupted and unreadble. i tried the check disk but it doesnt work it just says windows was unable to complete the disk check. can anyone help me?????

Hopefully at the first sign of trouble you performed a backup. Hard disks are not backup but copies so you want enough copies to survive a drive failure.

Sometimes moving the drive to a new housing helps.

If all is not backed up and you are not going to try a new housing the game is up and you need to send it off to places like DRIVESAVERS.COM

well my files that i could open i backed up but what can i do about the other ones? is there a way to delete them?

To copy them out to another drive then start over on that drive.

im sorry i feel like im a pain but if i copy the files to a different drive then the files are still on the first drive and i still cant do anything about them and they are still there.....

Start over on the first drive. If this means deleting it's partition, creating a new partition and letting the OS format it then that's what we do.

Some forget about the partition step and try to just format.
