Brother MFC 5440CN does not recognize new ink!

I recently replaced with genuine Brother ink, the ink cartridges in my Brother MFC 5440CN. But the LCD still reads Black nearly empty, Cyan nearly empty..etc. The Brother website said the LCD will say "install new ink", but it didn't even say that. I popped out and put the cartridges back in, a couple of times, which I heard isn't a good idea. And as you would know it, my warranty ran out in October. Any ideas??

First, try installing the cartridges step by step according to Brother.
Second, if that doesn't work, try a different set.
Third, buy a new printer.

Blindfold your cartridges to get at all the ink

I've had this printer for at least a couple of years, and it's great, but it always lies about how much ink is left. It says "no ink," but it seems at least 1/4 full to me. Worst of all, it stops working when there's no ink, then it insults you by beeping when you're down.

After beeping back at it, then poking around at possible ink level meters, but without taking it apart, I think it "looks" in the side of the cartridge with a photodiode. I believe it's mounted on a little wafer down on the side closest to the edge of the printer. You can barely see it with a cartridge out. But there's a wafer in every slot.

I covered the outside of my generic cyan cartridge that was facing the alleged photodiode with a one inch long strip of electrical tape. It took a little more force to insert the cartridge properly, but blindfolding the sensor stopped the "no ink" message and let me get a fax.
