Printer not recognized

I am having a problem with Windows XP recognizing my Samsung ML-1710 printer. It was working fine till I had to move the pc and I plugged it into another USB port. I have 4 USB port and clumsy me did not remember which USB belonged to which device. My scanner and everything else using the USB ports are ok but Windows just refuse to recognize my printer. I have tried uninstalling all drivers and just put in my printer but still no luck sad

Can anyone help?

http://www.usbman.com in its passage notes such ills. Not only must you install drivers for the printer, but sometimes drivers for the USB or motherboard.

There are also reports that some things USB will not work on USB hubs.

Your comment "My scanner and everything else using the USB ports are ok" is nice, but this still doesn't mean all is well or that the printer is in good working order or motherboard drivers are current. Hint: Windows Update and that Driver Update will not do this for us.

To me it was obvious, but some fault me if I don't state such.

What says the port is good? In fact, why not try the other ports?

Tried all the 4 ports I had, no luck. I just tried the additional one I had on the front of my pc (forgot all about it when I went on a full fledge panic this afternoon) and guess what, windows finally prompted new hardware found.

I did some checking in Microsoft's support and apparently some peripherals dont work when we pull it out when the pc is off. something about windows permanently allocating that port for that one and only peripheral. That bug will only be updated in Windows XP service Pack 2. Sigh.

Be aware I've never had this issue. But I can boot safe mode, unplug the failed device, make my way to the Device Manager to remove the failed entries, then reboot and pretend its a fresh/new install of that device.
