Connecting 9-pin Serial wire to USB wire

I have a graphics tablet that i would like to connect to my laptop. The wire is a 9-pin Serial but my laptop doesn't have this port. I have a spare usb cable and i was wondering if it is possible and how i would connect the wires of the serial cable (after removing the connector) to the usb cable (after removing the B connector end)?? I mean so i can join the wires together so i can connect the tablet using USB. The thing that puzzles me is that there are more pins (and i presume therefore more wires) in the serial than in the usb. I am aware that i can by a serial to usb connector but i want to know if i can do it without.

Simply doesn't work.

RS232 is another voltage level so this would be a fine way to damage some parts.
