Both use optics to control the mouse, as opposed to the traditional ball, but the laser mouse is by far the superior breed. They use a laser, as opposed to LED light, which makes them up to 20x more precise than an optical mouse. In addition, they can be used on many surfaces where optical mice would fail to pick up the detail. Now, although laser mice are superior, few people, aside from gamers, would find the need to spend additional money when an optical mouse gets the job done almost as well. Thus, the decision is up to you, but if you find a laser mouse around the same price as a similarly-featured optical mouse, the deal'll be hard to pass up.
Hope this helps,
Optical vs. Laser
I just switched from MS Optical Mouse Blue to a Kensington Pilot Mouse Laser Wireless. Mainly because it was on sale at Best Buy for $19.99. The Laser seems more responsive, however for a short time my cursor started jigging and would slowly drift to the right. It was very annoying. That has fixed itself. Another thing I like is the absence of those flashing lights that come from the bottom of the Opticals. Another annoying feature. In all I am happy with my laser.
I just upgraded from an Logitech MX elite duo (optical) mouse to a Logitech G5 Laser mouse.
1. The lack of batteries in the laser is nice because I don't have to pause games to change them. But that is deference between cordless and corded.
2. The laser mouse is far more responsive. It took me a while to get used to it. now when I go stairs and use my dad's optical Microsoft mouse it takes me four times as long to move across the screen.
3. Also the laser mouse has a lesser coefficient of friction and adjustable sensitivity on the fly which I like.
our Microsoft mouse can't scroll up. You can scroll down using the wheel but when you try and go up it skips and makes slow progress. This happens on all our computers. Installing the Microsoft mouse drivers/ program does not help. Any ideas?
I had an two optical mice both of the same kind. One could not scroll up (it behaved exactly as you describe), but the other one was fine. You mouse is simply broken! I threw mine out.
Optical mouse does not work on BLACK
I have a black desktop and I have to use a colored mousepad for the optical mouse. Not sure if this happens with the laser mouse....
DEFINATELY LOGITECH LASER
No doubt about it it's LASER. Preferably the Logitech G-7 cordless. Runs on any surface including ones skin. If you like a corded one then get the G-5. They both have a dpi of 2,000.
It's your optical :( try again
i wonder witch mouse you got ?
don t know exactly, but for sur last 3 years i have used my lovely black mousepad with :
- shity microsoft optical, (witch by the way doesn t like my glass desk, jumping on white writen in black papers, loste on magazine etc..)
- MX 700 (witch look good bc black & metal colored)
& never had any mal fonctions with that mousepad
But because there's a BUT :
black is not black
optical's seam to matter a lot with the surface, to shiny, to mat you say your back mousepad doesn t feat but have you try the same texture with an other colore i wonder & be interest to know if it work
hope you will change to black
always prefer luc skywalker green tube
Optical mouse or laser
I had to give up my optical mouse when I got a new METAL top desk. It will not work on metal. I've even tried to work on a mouse pad. I've tried removing the receiver thing from the metal top and placing it on wood. Nothing seems to work. Would a laser mouse work on metal?
I use a Logitech MX1000 on a metal countertop (stainless steel) and I've experienced no problems other than my arm getting cold from the steel. I can't rant enough about how much I love my laser mouse that I've had for over a year now. I recommend them to all my friends.
Thank you so much. I will buy the new mouse tomorrow. I can't believe someone in one of the office supplies didn't know this. Yippee!
Thank you so much, I bought the Kensington Pilot mouse laser wireless and it works beautifully. No problems.
Again thanks for the help.
NOT TRUE!! At least not for me.....
I'm using a Logitech wired mx510 optical mouse on a black MIKAEL desk (from IKEA) and it works just nicely.
I'm thinking that either a) perhaps my mouse is able to track the "graining" on my desktop as distinguishable features and texture or b) something's up with your mouse... either a defect or just the way it was made?
WL kinda changes a mouse's function from non-WL. Batteries, possibility of 'skipped' signals..... but not all WL have this issue. Many don't. Assuming laser WL mice are the same in this regard to WL optical, I'd say get a laser mouse if you need it for precision gaming, drawing, or do "surgical manuevers around pixels".
I personally would not get a laser mouse unless it was under $25. I've never used a laser mouse so i don't know how good they are firsthand, but I wouldn't spend more than that anyways just b/c i don't need/want one THAT badly. My Logitech mx510 wired optical mouse is more than sufficent.
This mouse is the greatest. I've got a MX1000 laser mouse for my desktop but the GO mouse beats it. You can get 30 feet away from your computer; you don't need a desk or table top: it works in the air! Raise it("swipe") and turn up the volume; lower it and reduce the volume. You can assign various commands with its directional movement.
Well, I have two mice, one is rat 5 (laser 4000dpi) and the other one is Kinzu (optical 3200dpi) by steelseries,
I'd like to know what you think of high-dpi mice but laser....
I feel it is really good, dispite the fact that it may not work in any surface.
very useful info !
My mouse is broken,. Probably will go for LASER, any recommend brands?
My experience, I bought a kinzu from steelseries, in a shop, I returned it twice, steel series are not good mouse, they are defective currently I had had two of it, google it or look in youtube kinzu double click issue and you will see.(every steelseries mice have issues)
My recomendation is Cyborg R.A.T 5 which also had a problem it stopped working, I changed it, the one I have know works great! (google it as well)
but the most recommendable is cyborg rat 5
