How can I make a permanent USB drive keep its drive letter?

My wife just bought me a 1GB Flash Drive so I can move files from place to place. When I put it in my desktop computer, it changes my permanent USB hard drive from ''K'' to ''L'' and takes on the ''K'' letter. When this happens, several programs that were nstalled on the ''K'' drive stops working.

How can I prevent this, or how can I make my USB ''K'' drive unchangeable? I'm using the XP operating system.

With the device plugged in, go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Disk Management and find the drive there. Do a right click and select the option to change the drive letter. Move it down the alphabet and out of the way of the rest of the list. I'd move it in the XYZ range. See if that makes it stick. Good luck.
