Networking & wireless forum: Why will my internet only connect if my wired computer is on

Unfortunately this router was brought quite a few years ago and can't be returned any more.
What details do you need to know?

Your story didn't reveal it worked before. Also no mention of trying defaults or what version firmware. This information is often too hard for folk to supply so I understand and will work with anything folk supply.

If this is all that we know we'll have to say the router has failed.

The router still works perfectly fine, it just only works with a wired computer plugged in. I think it has always been like that.

This is just some simple settings but I believe it includes the firmware version.
I have just checked and there is apparently no update for the router at the moment.
If you need any more pictures of settings or any more details please just ask.

Why is this set to PPPoA versus PPPoE?

PPPoA may require that PC log on to your service. PPPoE would be preferred since the router/modem would auto logon.

It's your setup so let's hope you know why you did that.

I think having it set as PPPoA might be the problem.
Unfortunately, it seems like my ISP, TalkTalk, only support PPPoA, not PPPoE.
I guess it just means that I have to have my PC on to use the internet.

I see that folk have used PPPoE and TalkTalk has it's own forum for such issues.

It appears that your router/modem is not auto connecting. It could be a setting but TalkTalk support should have this question down pat with a ready answer. Clues are spread out over your posts but from what I can tell, the router is not logging on to the account until your wired PC connects.

That's a setting issue but can be very specific to the ISP.

Time to ask them what to change. (I don't work for TalkTalk so I can't know what's different.)
