What device can I use to connect to a Public Network

My problem is accessing a public router.
I have had no success using free firewalls and paid versions so I thought to find a router like device that would solve my problems of dropped connections and security concerns.
Because my laptop has a Wireless G adapter that is located 65 feet away from the main router (and have been told that it is at its maximum reach) I suffer from random dropped connections and a weak signal strength. Living in the suburbs probably does not help much with so many houses around and so many networks and wireless devices running all the time.
I am looking for a wireless solution that will bridge/access/repeater (have been told these 3 types provide the same function) to the main router and be able to create a new network with its own private password and firewall. I definitely need all listed requirements and the ability to configure which computers can access the wired ports would be nice as well.
Is there ANY device or devices that will do this without involving wires or a powerline soluction?
