Networking XP to Win7

Hi....

I am trying to add an XP computer to our (already) Win7 computer.
Now...I have connected the xp computer to the external modem that gived the 7 it's signal by way of ethernet cable). I went through changing and matching up the workgroup names, and.....turned on "Network Discovery" on the 7 end....after everything is said and done...I DO get the internet signal to the xp, but knock out the 7, altogether. Ant ideas as to what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, Carl

But tell me if you turned off the router's firewall. It does block shares. But I read your posts and see nothing about a share being made. Without that, the machine won't be seen.

And yes, there is a way to make a machine seen without a share, but for most, too techy.

Hi Bob...

Not using a router...the ethernet cable from XP is connected directly INTO the external modem that the 7 uses.

Without a router the setup becomes an expert one. Tell me how you setup the IP addressing. It's not automatic and since most want their internet to still work, this complicates it further.

Not only do you have to deal with the widely discussed 7 and XP network issue now you get to deal with addressing and more.

You also didn't tell me if a share was made.

in reference to what Bob said, to get this to work will require much more knowledge than most people have. Do the easy, simple plug-n-play method. Get a router and turn on file and printer sharing on both machines. Done.
