I just got a 2nd computer. A laptop running Win8. I also have a 1 year old desktop running Win7 that is hard-wired to my Verizon FIOS wireless router.
The two computers can't see each other on the homegroup network. I've turned on all the network discovery, etc. The laptop can see the router and get to the internet and see the printer that is hard wired to the router.
I think I may have found the issue, but don't know how to fix it: The desktop has an IP address of 192.168.2.100, but the laptop has an IP of 192.168.1.10. I am thinking that the 3rd string of numbers needs to be the same (???), but don't know how to get that to happen. I tried setting a static IP address on each of the computers, but when I do that, neither of them can see the router anymore, so they don't see any network and can't get to the internet.
I need the computers to see each other for file sharing, and because I have a laser jet printer connected to the desktop that I want to be able to use from the laptop, but it's not a "network" printer, so I'd need to set up print sharing.
All of this stuff was working back before my old laptop died a few years ago.
Also, as additional info, I have a VOIPO (VOIP) router and a DirecTv router wired into the wireless router. I asked on the VOIP forum if their router has any effect, but it doesn't. Don't know if the DirecTv router is an issue or not, and don't know how to find out.

Those machines are different LANs so you need to talk to who set this up to create a single LAN.

I set them up, sort of. When I got the desktop machine last year, I set it up, but didn't do anything, and didn't really care because the laptop had already died, and I was using another old laptop that I didn't care if it was connected to the network, only that it could get to the internet and printer. When I got the new laptop a couple of weeks ago, I tried to set it up, but it could never see the network, and I don't know how to make it see it. That's what I'm asking for help with

Those are not on the same LAN so if you want them to see each other, create a single LAN. I don't own your gear so I don't have the manuals and more but the cause is in your posts so fix that!

Please bear with me, I'm a Finance guy, not a computer person. You say they are not on the same LAN, and that I need to fix that. I don't understand that issue, because they are on the same LAN (AFAIK). They are both connected to the same wireless router. Therefore, I don't know what to fix or how to fix it.
If you are saying they are on a different LAN because of the 3rd string in the IP address, then I get that, but I'm asking how to fix it. How do I get them on the same LAN? My desktop is on a homegroup called Network 2, but my laptop isn't able to see that network. How do I get it to see it?

You have your Verizon router and the VOIPO router. If you setup that as most folk you have more than one LAN. And the IP addresses show you did indeed set it up as more than one LAN.
You have the Verizon LAN and then your VOIPO into that and it appears your new laptop is on the second LAN (VOIPO).
Put the laptop onto your Verizon LAN and it will show up. Or alternatively put both on the VOIPO.
Your choice.

How do I put the laptop on the other LAN? Everything is hard wired to the router except the laptop. I don't know how to tell the laptop to connect tot he other LAN

With that VOIPO it appears you created a second LAN. Turn it off and setup the laptop again.
Sorry but such setups may require a tech to come out if you can't do this.

I could probably do that. I set up the VOIPO. But would it also worked if I hard wired the laptop to the verizon router and restarted the laptop? Would that allow the Network discovery to see the proper LAN? Then, when I pulled the plug, would it continue to connect to the verizon LAN?
