PK5000 router - drops our internet randomly

I'm using a PK5000 modem/router provided by my ISP and it keeps dropping our internet connectiong. My husband and I both work from home. I have a router connected to my work computer and log in that way and he logs in through a VPN on his work laptop. We have turn WPS off (which now affects our TV internet, not a huge deal) and in order for him to stay connected they told us to enable DMZ hosting. I'm not a tech type but I'm learning. We're still being dropped randomly and the ISP says we should get our own modem/router and bridge it to prevent it from dropping by using a switch. So now that I'm totally confused by all this, I'm wondering if the best bet is to get a new modem/router and not use the one from the ISP. My work IT team thinks there might be filters on the modem with all of the vpn'ing activity. Suggestions? Should I buy a modem/router and which would solve our problem? Do I also need to install the switch on it? We have a home desktop, home wireless laptop, hubby work laptop and then my work desktop and I have to plug my work phone/computer into the router they provided to have access. If I lose work computer I also lose phone - it all goes through the same box. Help!
