Basic Networking Question

by ukdanwls - 9/19/12 9:26 AM

Hi All,

I hope i dont offend anyone by asking this question however i am new to networking so I'm looking for a bit of direction really - although google is plentiful; it is often hard to understand the foundation point of learning and I can get swayed from one site to another and be left lost. I tried to attach a png of a network setup but couldnt so here is the text of the setup :

<div>Modem into
<span>PC acting as Router into
<span>Switch
<span>Wired into 4 client computers (linux/windows/mac)
<span>Wired into mail serverWired into LDAP/DNS/SAMBA Server
<span>Wired into Database server
<span>Wired into Web ServerWired into Print Server
<span>Wired into NAS Tray holding 4 nas boxes
<span>Wired into a Wirless Access Point : Wireless access point offering wifi to 2x smartphone, ipad and 2 laptops

I would like some feedback on whether this work as a viable network setup.
1) Modem into a custom built pc to act as the router to offer additional security
2) That into the switch which support 4 wired client computers and 5 servers and wap
3) LDAP/SAMBA combination to create user authentication to access the network domain
4)Dedicated web/mail/print servers and database server. Windows and Mac client pcs will have sql developer for querying the database platform
5)NAS Storage connected to the switched to mapped as network drives to client computers for shared folders
6)Wireless access point offering wifi connectivity to laptops/smart phones and tablets.

Is this complete fantasy or is this a good basic understanding of how the network would be setup. Or have i completely got it wrong in terms of the servers communicated on the network.

As i said , i dont want to offend anyone with this post so please excuse my possible naivity. Im just looking for someone who has the knowledge and perhaps nothing to do for a couple minutes; who wouldnt mind commenting on my questions.

Any comments, would be massively appreciated.

Dan.
