Networking & wireless forum: Newly Built Desktop - Want Wifi

According to the technical specs of my router, it supports dual-bands, which means it broadcasts at 2.4 AND 5. This means there's nothing to configure as far as frequency is concerned, right?

Still need an answer about the N-band thing, whatever that is, and about what wireless adapter (pci, usb, etc) would be best for me.

The bandwidth was more than enough, far more than my internet connection and the better range meant less headaches.

Given that USB and 802.11n are so much faster than your internet connection, can you share why you would need more? And why some 8 buck thing won't do?

I don't know what i need, or why some 8 buck thing would or would not work for me. As i stated originally, i know very little about this so please be explicit.

From the little research i've done, i think i want 802.11g, n seems overkill but i'd like to consider an 802.11n solution anyway as i want to do everything i can to capitalize on the 50mb/s (comcast in this area is notorious for providing barely over half the speed of what you pay for)

Here's a thing I carry with me on a call to step in if I suspect the laptop's wifi has failed. No driver install for Windows 7 which means not much to fuss with. It is marked as 802.11g but when I plug it in, it does both N and G. Under 8 bucks.

You can put it on some USB extension cable if you need to move it for better reception and it's under 8 bucks to my mail box.

I'm sure you can pay more but doubtful it will make the internet work any faster.

Awesome, the information you provided was very useful. I think i'll look for that adapter elsewhere as the shipping time on that bad boy from amazon is absurd.
