I need tips on some home servers

I would like to start a Home Server, with which I can also stream movies and music. I would like to know what kind of OS, Hard Drives, the amount of RAM, and also what kind of already pre-made servers are there that are of good quality. I want to use it wirelessly, and also set it up with a virtual drive on my laptop. Thorough answers are very welcome.

I prefer microsoft, but am also linux savvy. Cost is important, but I don't mind spending more on the heavy side if it's worth the cost.

Why a server? Wouldn't a wireless hard disk to contain your movies and music, that you can access in in your Windows Media Player on your PC's and laptops be enough? Or do you have requirements you didn't mention?

Well, I fear that a wireless hard drive, wouldn't be able to stream from America to Germany over the internet with any sort of realistic speed. I would like to use it as a virtual drive, that I can have instant and fast access to, mostly for media streaming but also files etc.

That's not what I would call a home server: server in America, client in Germany.

I'd look at some form of webstorage (Dropbox, MS Skydrive, Google Drive) for the files. No real need nowadays to store them at home.
Streaming requires software (a webserver with the right programs) and a relatively fast upload to Internet. That's quite something else. Maybe it's best to outsource that part to a hosting company.

It's a Levono tower running XP Pro with two Gig of RAM. It serves my web site and my other wired and wireless PCs (3). I've turned on File and Printer sharing. I have all my movies and "stuff" on a 400 Gig slave drive and can share with all my PCs. It has a Gigabit LAN adapter as do all my other PCs and router so transfer/streaming is fast. I got it refurbished from the Levono web site http://www-304.ibm.com/shop/americas/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/default/CategoryDisplay?categoryId=2576395&storeId=1&catalogId=-840&langId=-1

For you, you could do the same with almost any PC and install a wireless LAN adapter and place it anywhere.

BTW, I've bought at least a dozen desktops and laptops from that site, all worked perfectly.
