How does a Dell PowerEdge server work?

Hey all!

I was recently employed as a part-time IT consultant.
I don't have any formal training but I know my general way around a computer, but this is the first time i've ever worked with a physical server in the office, and they say they often have network errors where some computers lose connection to the server completely and it's not clear what is causing it or when it'll return.

It's only my first week here and though it's been all clear so far, i'd better be prepared.

Can someone help me out here?
Is there a server administration utility or some way to manage the server?

It appears I can connect my laptop to the server physically with an ethernet cable and somehow work on it that way, but I haven't tried anything yet for fear of crashing it.

It's a fairly old server full of multiples duplicates of various files (they don't treat it too well), and there's a desktop screen connected to the server unit.

Should I try working on it via that desktop?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!
