Cisco 1841 ISR and SDM

When I attempted to log into a Cisco 1841 ISR, the SDM banner motd showed that I had to use the default username and password cisco to access the router, then change them. I changed the username and password and saved the updates to startup-config. I wanted to remove the requirement for a username and password at console login so and I went back into config and issued a no username' command for the username I added and saved the updates to startup-config. I logged out and couldn't log back in. I attempted a password recovery by breaking the boot with a confreg 0x2142 , and rebooted the router , and I am still locked out. I am guessing I could copy the startup-config to from another router to removable flash, put that flash in the router I screwed up , and boot from flash ? Any tips would be most welcomed. Thanks

Moving the flash will have no effect the configuration is saved to a chip on the main board.

When you change the confreg to 0x2142 and reboot you should get the message asking if you want to run the auto config. This means there is no configuration loaded which is what you want it to do. If it is not doing that you did not set the confreg correctly when you broke into the rommon. You just have to keep trying until you get it right there is no other way to get into the router.

I tend to never use the auto config script and first command I do on any new router I get is to erase the nvram and reload to get rid of that pre installed junk.

The default blank router config allows access only via the console but with no passwords or ids.

Thanks bill012. I kept running into the SDM banner motd that showed I had to use the default username and password cisco to access the router, even after I set confreg to 0x2142. I'll get back to the locale to break the boot and try again. If that works I can erase the nvram and reload the IOS. Thanks
