Firestation needs wireless

Hello,

I work for a fire department as a fire fighter / quasi-tech guy.

We would like to install a wireless network throughout the station. Currently we have a wired network with 15 PC's and are looking at obtaining tablets for our squads and apparatus. The station is quite large and is divided by the vehicle bays.

I'm thinking that we will need multiple access points throughout the station.
I am familiar with setting up one wireless router but not with multiple access points.

So I'm asking the great community of Tom's Hardware for advice and recommendations on how to set this up and with what equipment.

Not a lot more to a access point than a router. Many times people use routers with the "router" part turned off since they are cheaper than true access points.

The set up the wireless stuff and concerns about channels and security are exactly the same.

In your case it may be worth using a real access point mostly because PoE is a common feature. Seems the best location for access points never seems to be anyplace close to a power outlet.

Pretty much you run the access points back to the lan port on your main router and treat them as wireless switches.

Now if you want fancy access point roaming and load balancing of AP you will need to pay big money for commercial systems.
