Hi everyone. This is my situation. The router is located at one end of the house and my room (with laptop, xbox, other wireless devices) is located at the other end, The wireless signal doesnt reach my room. With the 2,5g signal I get no bars in my room and with the 5g signal I only get a bar. I can connect to the 5g signal with my laptop but not my Xbox 360 is other wireless devices. I have tried using network extenders and they dont work either. I tried using 2. The first one didnt work at all and the one I have now works...sometimes but only through wireless not wired. If I have it wired into the extender it connects to the 5g network only not the 2.5g. Usually it works for only a little while before it loses signal and I have to power cycle the extender to get it back. It is also extremely slow. Almost like dial up speeds. I cant even watch a youtube video. It streams only a tiny amount at a time, will play, then stops and streams again. I cant watch any streaming video without it buffering nonstop. My question is what can I do to fix this? I cant move the router. It has to stay where it is. The extender method is not working at all. What other ideas can I try? Maybe getting a second router? What about a power-line network adopter? If possible I would like to be able to have my laptop and xbox plugged in through an Ethernet cable but I also need a wireless signal for my ipad and other wireless devices. At this point I just want reliable non-dialup like internet. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated,

Try Powerline

In my experience, powerline adapters have been very reliable and provide a good connection. You can use those in conjunction with a wireless router set up as an access point to give you wired and wireless internet access in your room.

So would I need a second router and a powerline adapter for my room or just a poweline adapter from the main room to my room? Do they make powerline adapters that offer wireless? I havent been able to find one...

And while they do make such with WiFi on the other end I would do it the same way I've done for years.

That is, the powerline bridge then to some cheap router as a WAP. If you need to know how to do that, google "How to use a router as a WAP."

I will look that up. As far as the powerline ive seen 200mbps ones and 500mbps. Which one should I get for my needs of high speed downloading and game playing?

I am not sure. I have my internet through my cable company: optimum online.

No, you do not have any high speed access to need more than the usual 802.11n speeds. 200 will be fine.

You can run a long ethernet cable either inside or outside the house to reach your room. You can use MOCA to convert from coax to to ethernet and vice versa to run it to your room if a coax outlets exists in both, although the moca stuff is rather expensive right now and may require some technical tuning and the use of a filter to not interfere with tv signals from cable or satelite. Powerline adapters are designed to be on the same electrical circuit so unless one breaker turns off both outlets its possible this will not work reliably. though they are fairly cheap and you can of course try it.

Ethernet up to 100 meters [a little over 300 yards] is definitely the preferred method you just plug one end into the router port, and the other end either directly to your equipment; a wired switch, a wireless access point inside your room, or both a wired switch and an access point.

The other option is to pay for a second internet service and have that one run to your room either dsl or cable depending on what options area available to you and what outlets are usable in our room. This is a rather expensive monthly cost but can be done.

My issue with running a long eithernet cord is how will I keep it on wall or ceiling. I cant have it on the floor because I have little kids running around

Since I am trying to get wireless and a wired connection in my room if I buy a second router and connect it via a long Ethernet cable to my main router will that give me a wired and wireless connection? or do I have to buy both a wireless access point and a wired switch for my room?

In effect you need a wireless AP and a switch as you say but when you go to the store you will find routers are cheaper and contain the AP, the switch and the router plus many other things.
Pretty much you buy a router and just use the parts you need and ignore the rest. Some routers have special options to do that but with a little google search you can use any router if you cable it correctly.

getting wires professionally installed

i am going to have an electrtion install the wires i need since i want them to run outside. my question is do i just have him run an ethernet cable to my room or is there a different/better cable i should use?

Nothing special cat 5e will run 1g. Most the time they run cat 6 because there is little difference in price.

Technically they should use outdoor cable but I have had the cheapest stuff there is run up a 30ft tower and it has no issues.

If you are paying someone have it run though the attic and down the walls. Drilling though the outside walls and running it around the house is something people do themselves.
