Networking & wireless forum: Compatability of gigabite router to 10-100 computer

Thanks for all your information. It turns out you all were right, although it didn't help. Since the router was new I took it back and the Geek Squad tested it and it was faulty. They replaced it with an identical unit. It worked perfectly first time.

I only have 2 units that I want to connect at this time. One is a desktop that will be hard lined to the router and the other is my laptop that will use the N-wifi.
the router is brand new. I have tried 3 different cat-5 cables all work direct from the cable modem to desktop or laptop. the router sees and comunicats with the cable modem (i think based on the manuals information, but not with the desktop at all. the eathernet adptor is part of the motherboard. i have double checked all the settings fore the adptor and they seem to be correct.
reading around the net what I see is that they won't communicate because the gigabite output from the router is not able to use all 8 wires in the cat-5 so it just stops working.
thats all i know at this point. looking for your input and expertees.

They PROVED to me that the router would not work by showing the PC working with the cable modem and then hooking up the router and it would not work.

I had to configure the router, power cycle the cable modem then reboot the PC and it worked fine.

Today's owners are not going to want to fiddle, configure and reboot this or that. Maybe this technology is not ready for many out there?

PS. The gigabit ethernet is not the cause or issue here.

What I have found is you need to do a few steps, in this order.

1.) With everything connected, modem -> router -> PC, power everything off.

2.) Power up modem, wait for the lights.

3.) Power up the router, wait for the lights.

4.) Power up the wired PC.
