Is it not possible to do what I am asking?
Then what is application server?It's available in windows server both 2003 and 2k8.
What is done by that?
No book I read had covered this thing.

You buy client licenses for these depending on how many PCs need to use them. These products do not come cheap and don't think you can make products work that were not designed for this purpose. Good luck finding a full range of such whatever software you need that will run this way as they seem to have just about disappeared. We'd considered this years ago in a school environment as a way to save money but found the opposite to be true and the complications too many. Look up "thin client" versus "thick client" and see if you think your idea is practical.

Then it's not useful to you. Yes I could use google to do that research but your question is one we know about and for the system folk wanted, it does not work. At least for the apps folk often want to run today. Word would not work this way and since you didn't reveal what you wanted to run, I have to guess it's the usual.

Which costs a lot. And I could save money by installing it on one PC and making use from other's as well.

You can look at TERMINAL SERVER again but most will come away bruised over the costs and the FACT it still required you to install the TS Client on the PCs.

Why not consider apps that are open source or free next time? Adobe and Corel are COMPANIES and not applications so if you want help in finding replacements, be more specific.

It's commonly used in VPN-solutions and thin clients. So, yes, it is reliable. But it's necessarily said that, taking everything into account, it's better and cheaper than installing those programs locally on a PC.

When we were considering something like this in a school the ultimate question became "What happens if the server goes down?". The answer is that no one can access the software until the server is fixed. That risk and the way client license purchases were packaged was enough to scuttle the idea.

But what if the Server is running perfectly fine? We can then save both time and resources. Consider it this way, I have 5 clients attached to my server, but to all of them I give a small chunk of Hard Disk space, or maybe separate HDDs with small space. Then if my server has all the applications installed and the clients are accessing the apps from the server, then I am saving my time, money and resources ultimately!

If server not working, big problem. If we have 20 kids needing access to PPT for a project and the application runs from a server that's on the fritz, 20 kids can't do their project. If we have PPT on 20 PCs and one is on the fritz, 19 kids get their work done. # 20 will have an excuse to be late.

I agree with your point. But why do we have to consider that part only? Let's take an example of website hosting. If I host a website on some remote server in the USA, and I live in India, of course I don't have direct contorl over the hosting server, I am only paying the company who's giving me space to host my website. Then if there server is down for any reason whatsoever, my website won't be available for sometime then. But that doesn't mean that I won't host my website on that server. If everyone starts thinking that, then all the web-hosting services would die out! Your point is worth noticing, but thinking about that only and giving up the idea completely, sorry, I don't agree with that then.

and not web servers. I believe your question was looking for ways to buy one application license and share it. Perhaps I was wrong in that presumption. MS, at least, has anticipated and foiled the attempt to work around their licensing policies. I must admit that I experimented with this idea years ago with older Windows operating systems and was able to access run some less sophisticated programs from my PC that were on another. In some cases all I needed to do was copy a few .dll files to my PC and the application would run fine. Those from MS and experienced developers refused to work. It's not that none will do as you want but the ones you want probably won't....if that makes sense.

Now I get your point completely. Thanks for the info! In the case that you described now, I guess, you and R. Proffitt were right. It's useless to make an application server. I guess I have my answer, no more querries from my side. Thanks for your time!

I've had these discussions and folk sometimes think that they need ONE license to serve 20 users. Nothing is farther from the truth. TS enforces the license and are you ready to pay up for all this?

This is why you should reconsider the same old PC, and use apps like LibreOffice and The Gimp if there is a budget issue.

Even if budget is not an issue, then it doesn't makes sense to spend so much to install such applications separately on each computer. I don't know if Applicatiom Server can be built, but I am highly intrerested in it. If this thing is possible, it could help to make things much better. If I have to buy licenses for each client, then also I will have to buy hardware for each of my client. For example, consider that somebody is giving their client machines 20 GB HDD each. But if they install applications on each client, then they will have to increase the disk space for all the clients too. Though not much, but the overall cost thus increases. Thus cumulatively the cost would increase only. Moreover, more time will be spent in installing on each client. Thus, such an Application server won't only save money, but time too.

Guess what? We're back to laptops at the office. No savings with what you are trying.

Maybe your office can live with your solution, ours could not.

I was just kinda giving an example in support to the question...Not particularly the scenario of my office. Moreover, learning something new is no problem. Okay, if you say it's not that fruitful with the current working environments at offices, but perhaps a nice addition to knowledge atleast then?

You'll repeat lessons learned by us and others but you'll learn why you don't see this system very often.

If you can't use solutions given such as terminal server or dumb terminals on Linux or X terminals on Linux then you can't do this.

I really mean YOU here. You have the terms, you have the titles of the solutions but it appears you need someone to create this for you.

TS would be best. I could mention another solution but it's much harder and it seems you are reluctant to go try this on your own. Or learn by doing.

For example, have you ever installed TS? Or Linux and its X window system?

I used TS in server 2003 and xp.

Why all the above posts? You used it and know about it yet you seem to have forgotten your use?
