Resolved question

Why is my router not working again?

by adrianlupas - 4/18/11 3:42 PM

Hello.

I have a problem that is getting very annoying by the minute.

I used to have a DLINK router, which held for about one year. I brought a brand new Hama router, 300 mbps, that worked for exactly a month. This morning, when i started my PC, the internet worked through the router for about 30 minutes and then stopped.

I have a desktop PC in the house, that used to directly connect to the internet through cable, PPPoE. The cable is now set into the WAN port of my router, and i linked the PC to the router through another cable provided in the pack. So the cables are well put in, and the router lights blink green for both WAN and the PC connection. I also set up the wireless so the laptop i have on the side can connect cable-free.

Now i called my ISP and complained about the internet not working. At first, it wasn't working directly either, without a router, telling me that the "username/password combination was not recognized on the server", but after a quick call they fixed it and it now works by direct connection, no router involved. They say that it's probably a bad setting in the router config, even though i didn't change anything before or after the crash.

I manually reset the router using the button in the back and re-did the settings as original, and when i try to connect manually through the router it says it can't connect to the server, and the system log states "Starting PPPoE daemon" and "dns restart" afterwards, keeping on and on and nothing being solved.

So the username/password combination for the PPPoE is okay, i triple checked, the router is set on PPPoE xDSL so that is okay, the cables are put in okay and the router recognizes them, manual restart was a no go, and this is getting annoying.

Any ideas? Did the ISP change the DNS and now my router got screwed up? Any other settings i could do, anything would be useful.

Thanks.
