wireless router works in one location but not another

Got new laptop computer. had a standard router and decided to switch to wireless Linksys WRT54GS v5. Now...the router was given to me by a friend who lives about a mile from me. he has time warner cable, using a scientific atlanta modem and the router he gave me works at his house.

however, at my house, when i hook it up exactly as at his house, my laptop doesn't see the wireless connection. even when i plug my laptop into a lan port on the router, my laptop still doesn't see the router.

i do an ipconfig and it doesn't find the router, even if it connected via hard wire.

i contacted time warner and they said not their problem.

my laptop connects to my friend's wireless network with no problem.

laptop is Compaq Presario CQ56 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

any ideas?
