Can I add a wirelss N router to my G network?

MY current network is wireless G and I want to add wireless N. Obviously I could buy a router that does both, but nothing seems to do both well. I was thinking I could just add a 5ghz N router and my odd 2.4ghz G will handle the rest - however if I was confident that would work, I wouldn't be posting.

Assuming that it is possible, if I wanted to get a 2.4ghz N router for my iphone 4 (as they aren't compatible with 5ghz), will both routers (2.4ghz G + 2.4ghz N) work if I have them on different channels?

My goal is to stream movies via desktop - xbox 360 - TV using wireless N. I can't lose G because of my girlfriends apple laptop, my TV, and my phone (unless I use 2.4ghz N).

Any insight would be appreciated

will broadcast on both G and N.

Mixing a wireless G router and a wireless N router is possible. In simple terms, the setup is a PITA.

My D-link DIR-655 works perfectly.

Many routers now have 2 radios in them. One for 5 and another for 2.4

They can run N on both or run G on 2.4 and N on 5 and I think even A on the 5 if you really want.

The best option to get it to work is as you propose run one radio on 5gig using N and the other on 2.4g running G. If you REALLY need both G and N on 2.4 you will need 2 routers or pay a fortune for something like cisco that has 3 2.4 gig radios. You have to plan very carefully in your channel selection and I am SURE your neighbors will like you using all the channels.... N can use 2 bands if you set it to wide. Using 5G for the N allows you much more channel selection.

You are on the right track most people do not know that you if you try to run G and N on the same router with only one radio it will slow down to G speeds.
