Looking for help on a Wireless Network...

OK,

We have had a wireless network in our home for several years. We have a desktop computer in the basement where the modem/wireless router is as we have a network printer plugged directly into the wireless router. My wife and I both have laptops and iPhones that require the wireless connection.

Last week we bought an HDTV along with a Blueray player that will connect to the Internet and stream Netflix movies and YouTube. There are options for a wireless connection on the DVD-player, which I found out after-the-fact requires a proprietary USB wireless stick, and an Ethernet port for a wired connection. I decided to go with a wired connection since I didn't want to drop another $80 for the Samsung wireless USB stick.

Again, the cable modem and wireless router are down in our basement, far away from the TV/DVD player. I was thinking I could use a wireless access point like the Linksys WAP54G I happen to have to connect to the DVD player thru the Ethernet port. I couldn't get the DVD player to connect to the wireless network for the life of me so I am wondering if I am missing a step? It passes a couple of the steps in the network test like the Gateway Ping and IP address but it ultimately fails to "see" the wireless network. I have temporarily disabled the security on the wireless network and opened it up so the access point should be able to "see" the wireless network, but it still doesn't connect.

Can an access point be used in this way or am I totally wrong on the concept? I know an access point can make a wired router "wireless" but I guess I am confused as to what else it can do.

And one is for the Samsung and other HDTV setups.

Ok, POST 18 or so is what I use instead of the more expensive WAP. But a WAP will do for those that don't want to learn anything more. DO that.

The WAP54G supports Wireless Bridging but setup is where I turn you back to the manuals because they change too often for me to keep up. And if it's in the manual I'll refer all members there everytime.

Ok, what else hardware wise do you have. I read a WAP54G but it was unclear if you actually had it and how you set it up.

Yes, I read your posts prior to posting my issue, but I am still a little unclear about how to proceed.

I happen to have a Linksys WAP54G on hand as we had purchased it for my mom's wireless internet, thinking it was a wireless router. So, being that it's in my possession, I wondered if I could make use of it to solve this problem.

The Samsung DVD player manual has nothing that can help me. I believe this is more of a network configuration issue. But do I need to configure the WAP by hooking it up to a laptop or desktop first and then reconnecting it to the DVD player? The Linksys instructions assume you are connecting the WAP to a PC.

I configure the WAP54G (per the manual!) by connecting it to a PC. Once I have it setup as a ethernet bridge I can use an XBox 360 or any other number of devices on that unit.

Setup tends to be where most stumble as the push the button to setup seems to not always work and almost never works with non-Linksys routers.

I think i need another router...

It would seem to me after reading the manual and pondering over the WAP's different modes, that i am still going to need another router into which the WAP must be attached in order to use it. For example, if i want to use the ethernet jack on the back of my Blue Ray DVD player in order to connect it to my wireless network, i would have to run an ethernet cable from there to a wired router and then to the WAP. It doesn't seem like from the diagrams that that I can plug the WAP directly into the ethernet jack on the DVD player. It has to be connected to a router of some kind no matter what, correct? If that's true, it almost makes more sense to go out and buy another "wireless" router and set it up as a WAP since wireless routers are cheap and you would only be dealing with one device vs two.

Does that make sense?

I see you read the setup to WAP mode. Try BRIDGE mode.

That's what I would set this to.

Additional hardware...

BTW,

You asked about additional hardware. The only other hardware I have is a Motorola Surfboard cable modem (provided by Comcast) and a Netgear wireless router connected together downstairs.
