Access point/range extender? not sure - Ethernet --> WiFi

Hi. I just got to University, and I've been give a nice little 4 port wired router to connected to the supplied broadband. only problem is, id like to have some WiFi. I've tried ad-hoc networks and bluetooth, but I think I'm just going to have to buy something. I don't want to buy a new router, because it wont have the settings the supplied one does, and I dot think they will give me them. What I want is something that takes Ethernet as an input, and just makes it wireless. I don't know if that is what an access point or range extender does.

I hope you understand what im trying to do here.

I use wifi routers. I won't duplicate what is currently post 18 in our forum sticky that tells how to use this for your solution.
