How to boost Linksys router signal?

I have a Linksys wrt54g router hardwired to my pc on our ground floor.

We also have a cable modem.

My daughter's laptop, however, has a problem receiving any signal in her room on the 3rd floor. The best signal she gets is low. Same with my laptop on 3rd floor.--

She has a Linksys Wireless Adapter card in her laptop. Mine is internal.

What can I do to strengthen the wireless signal to the upstairs? Moving the router is not an option.

boost the signal

options:
1. replace the antenna on the router with a better one.
2. buy a signal booster that will either go on the 2nd or 3rd floor.

Although you may need to be a bit "geeky" to try this and on a $0 budget, it does work.
