Firewall protection when I disable SPI?

I am using a D-Link DIR-625 router hard wired to a Windows XP Professional PC computer. I am trying to get a wireless internet connection within my LAN for a Wii game console but I can't seem to do it. I do have a wireless internet connection in my LAN through this router for a laptop. On a Nintendo Wii FAQ web page, it is suggested that for my router I should disable the SPI firewall setting on the web page of my router settings.
I am a newbie with routers and I am not sure what the implications are for my router firewall if I disable SPI.
1) Will I still have an active router firewall if I disable SPI?
2)What does SPI do and what router firewall protection do I still have (if any) if I disable SPI?
