Computer Very Slow When Wireless Connection Is On

Airlink Wireless PCI Card
I recently set up my old desktop computer running Windows XP in my daughters room. For the past year while I was using it I had it connected directly to the router. Now that it's in my daughters room I'm connected it wirelessly with an Airlink Wireless PCI Xard. Up until a year ago, the computer had used this wireless card at my old house and it worked fine.
Now, whenever I have the wireless card enable my whole computer slows down to the point I cannot use it. It says it's connected to the computer with excellent signal strength. I cannot figure out why it's slowed down. I tried reinstalling the driver, that didn't help. I've tried using the utility that came with the driver to connect, still slow. I've tried using the windows utility to connect, still slow.
Once I disable the connection the computer runs fine.
I do have Microsoft Live Family Safety (a parental filter), can this be slowing it down for some reason? It's the only change to my system that I've made since the last time I used the wireless card.
