DHCP on College Campus- Router w/ comp and Xbox Live

by SpartanTempest - 9/4/07 4:43 PM

I am having a hard time setting up a network for my computer and my Xbox 360 in my dorm room. I am at Mich. State and they use a DHCP server for the whole campus. I understand most networking things, but this I have not been able to figure out.

I have my router (Linksys Wireless-G) plugged into the wall, then an ethernet cable from my computer and my xbox into the router's ports. In addition, the router broadcasts the wireless signal. Now, my problem is that I cant run the computer and the xbox at the same time. Normally, a router fixes this because it takes the one ip address from the isp and uses dhcp to assign private ip's, but that doesnt seem to be working since the incoming signal is already dhcp.

I am not sure how to split the signal into another ip or if i can use a static ip on the xbox or not. I did have to register the computer and the router to get access to the internet, but now that the router is set up I can delete the computer from the college's dhcp servers. Would this fix my problem by letting the router assign ip's rather than bypassing the router's job entirely because the computer is registered as well?

Let me know if you think you can help or need more information.. Thanks a lot
