Wireless Reception. Share the Wealth!
At this point in time - there are a lot of people getting wireless routers in their homes for the convenience. No Wires! I know women who have paid for Cable internet for YEARS and never installed it because they hate all the cables! Then , when they get the router at Best Buy they get frustrated attempting to secure the network. It does not make sense to encrypt these systems just so someone who is paying for it does not feel cheated. So it is open - and why not? Now their kids and friends can come over and work with them on their laptops - say at a poetry party, study group, porn hunt, etc.
There are whole towns that now have wireless access for free, there are hundreds of access points around NYC, San Francisco will have an open system soon.
So anyhow - if you are paying for your internet service and are too cheap to share the wealth take a few minutes and secure the system - the process is free! You make a choice to share it when you do not proceed to secure it.
I doubt that you will notice any difference in the speed of your connection after encryption - in fact it will probably be as slow as if a hundred people were logged on in a bittorrent client, due to the strains of encryption - and you will have the constant inconvenience of identifying yourself and your approved users to the access point.
