Difference between an access point and repeater?

What's the difference? I have a wireless router that cannot seem in my basement and I was wondering what should I do. Is there something I can do with my router or should I buy a repeater or access point?

Some routers are inherently stronger than others. Getting signal to your basement using a repeater will probably work, but will cut your speed, not that it matters 22 MBpS is still pretty good. Most routers have signal boosting antennas available that can give just enough oomph to get it an extra room/floor of range. For the most part there isn't anything you can do to your router (other than move it to a more prime and central location in your home). An access point would be ideal if you have wiring to parts of the house and your router can easily tap into it. In order for an acess point to work it has to be connected to the router hardwired.
