Why can't I access my files on my Desktop?

I'm dearly sorry if I at anytime seem rude or disrespectful. I've spent the last 5 hours talking with Linksys and Dell trying to fix this problem. Well, I wanted to create a network between my laptop and Desktop computer. They are connected through a wirless router. They both can access the internet, at the same time I might add. The problem was ,at the begining, was that my laptop could "see" in Network places my desktop, but not vice versa. I could put files in my Desktop's Shared folder and then view and save to the laptop. The desktop could "see" the laptop, but whenever it tried to access it, it said "//Dell is not accessible.......". So I called Linksys, didn't help. Then they told me to put my C drive on my desktop as "Shared" and the same with the laptop. Finally I was able to see the Shared folder and C drive of the laptop. Well, I tried to open a document saved in the laptops Shared folder on my Desktop. I was able to view the document on the Desktop, BUT I was not able to save it. It was classified as "READ-ONLY". I checked, that specific file was NOT marked READ ONLY. By the way, on the both computers firewalls were disabled and the C drive and shared folders would be able to be changed. I tried accessing a picture saved on the laptop, but it said that this network drive was unplugged or something and I should contact my Administrator. I then called Dell, the maker of my laptop. Their "techie" said that if I could see my laptop on my Desktop, that everything was good and I should be able to transfer pictures and stuff. Wrong. I told him that and he said that he did not have the info to deal with that and I should "google" it. Any help would be GREATLY apprieciated. If you have any questions, please ask.
