USB storage devices deactivated?

I recently added a USB hub, that I had used prior on another PC with no problem, to a different PC. I then tried to use it by plugging a USB flash drive into it. The flash drive lit up and it acted like it was "installing" the flash drive and then nothing.
Tried another USB drive, this time an external drive, and the same thing happened.
Now when I plug in these two USB devices anywhere, nothing at all happens. They don't light up, they don't show up on My Computer, and they don't show up under Disk Management. I have tried plugging them into different USB ports on the PC directly, into my laptop, and into my PC at work and nothing happens at all in any case. It's like the devices have been "deactivated". I have no problem with any other USB device on the PC this originally happened on as long as I plug in directly to a USB port on the PC. I'm afraid to plug anything else into the USB hub for fear of losing yet another device.
I have Googled this problem and I have yet to see anything that addresses this issue. Please tell me there is someway to fix this. If it makes any difference, the devices in question are a Kingston 32 gig flash drive and a WD 1 TB external HDD.
