Hello there, complete newbie to RAID needing help here.
I just purchased a RAID DAS (Direct attached storage) box and got a few key questions about setting it up that's not obvious (to me anyway) from the guidance etc and doesn't help being completely new to this sort of thing.
The box I've got is this: http://linitx.com/product/12437 and manual is here: http://www.siliconimage.com/docs/sataraid5-userguide_v1.40.pdf
First of all, I only need this to be a very simple backup box, I just need to see the disks in it as one drive, as simple as that (I don't actually need any redundancy as its backing up a Drobo box which has all that). So my first question is that with this particular eSATA RAID Card I SEEM to be limited to a set of 5 disks, is that right for my simple requirements? (I've currently got 6 in it). so do I have to have one set of 5, and 1 set of 1 for my current disks in it? Or is it just this particular card and a different one would work with this box and give me a large grouping? (also can you easily add to a grouping so if I increased it to 7 or 8 disks in future they would be added to the current one?).
Very grateful for some guidance on this, trying to avoid any complicated RAID language! - which hopefully I don't need anyway for my requirement - in fact, would a JBOD setup serve my needs? - some places seem to say it would but others say it will show the disks separately which I don't want.
Thanks in advance, M
