Turning off external hard drive connected to TV

I use a 1tb Seagate expansion drive to watch movies on my Samsung TV. Is it alright to turn the hard drive off at the wall before I turn off my TV or should I always turn the TV off first before I turn off the hard drive. I just don't want the hard drive spinning when I'm not watching anything from it but I'm not sure if this will corrupt the data.

If you're only reading from the hard drive, you can always turn it off with no problem. When writing to hard drive though, you want to go through a standard procedure. How do the movies get onto this hard drive in the first place? Do you put them on there via a computer, or do you have some gadget you haven't mentioned?

Yes, I am only reading the mp4, mkv etc files from the hard drive via the TV. I use a computer to write the files onto the drive. Thank you for your reply.

If the ext. HD doesn't get used, it should hibernate or sleep as it were. When you power off when its at that state, that's OK. But, usually there's no clue other than maybe the LED going off or different color. But, as noted it shouldn't be turned-OFF intently until its been dismounted or allowed to be OFF(its own). Anything else introduces problems. However, if you turn-OFF the TV, it should induce the ext. HD to hibernate or shutdown on its own. Of course all this depends on actual ext. HD being asked of. Then again, this may refer to PC usage rather than TV. Its a good question and one Seagate may return an answer if you query.

I emailed Seagate and they said they couldn't help with non computer questions and to contact my TV supplier. I talked to Samsung and they said to turn the hard drive off first before the TV. So I feel better that what I was doing was right and I don't have to leave the hard drive on all night while I watch other shows.
