I can add any movie, music or photo files to my hard drive from my PC and they play with no trouble when I plug the hard drive into the TV. However if I try to record a tv programme onto the hard drive then it requires formatting erasing all data. If I then format it will not allow me to add any media files when I plug it back into the PC. It asks me to format again erasing all recorded TV programmes. Is there a way to resolve this?

No. It's supposed to protect the content.

The recordings on the TV are protected and not supposed to be moved or played anywhere else.
I'm a bit surprised Samsung didn't tell you this.

I understand that recorded tv cannot be played on another device. However my point is why will it record onto a formatted hard drive but not from a hard drive with music on it from my pc. Surely they can find a way to play the music on my tv or pc from my hard drive but block the tv recordings when connected to my pc.. This would stop continual formatting. After all the bbci player can.
Maybe technically possible.

But do they document how? Most systems I've seen don't support such for very simple reasons. I'm sure you can guess.

It's Santa time. If he brings you a second hard disk, you can use one for recording TV, the other for music and photo's from your PC.
