NAS Recommendation

I am planning to replace my desktop (an 8 year-old, low-end Dell) with a new 13" Macbook Pro after the new year. I'm also planning to buy a NAS device to use with the Macbook.

The NAS device will be used for music and photo storage, and to backup the Macbook's hard drive. The photos are especially important to me, so I'd also like redundant storage.

I've been reading about NAS devices, and I'm leaning toward the Synology DS212j. From what I can tell, it should do what I want, at a good price, and work well with the Macbook.

Any opinions on this? Can anyone suggest other NAS devices that I should consider?

All was fine until you wrote the word "storage." All externals have shown that we can't consider them as storage but fine copies. If you want to repeat this lesson then what you noted will be fine.

-> Even if the NAS box has some redundant drives in that box it fails as backup because it's not a backup. It's in that same box and a box failure can roast everything in it.

Yeah, I hadn't considered the failure of the NAS itself, although it seems pretty obvious now.

Maybe I will reconsider the non-retina Macbook, so I can have a larger hard drive. Then I wouldn't need the NAS for storage, just backup. Actually, I guess I wouldn't need the NAS at all...just an external HD?

2 (actually more than that) externals and a sync app to keep them in sync.
A memory stick that holds stuff I can't lose (family photo collection and project files.)
And the cloud. Specifically DropBox which if you see how it works makes the files Hard To Kill.

-> This is a true story and it has repeated.

A person working on their Master Thesis opened their laptop and it was gone! The HDD had stopped spinning and it was gone. Because they didn't want to risk anyone getting a copy that was the only place it existed.

I thought at first they would have printed off a copy to review but in 3 years of working on the thesis they never printed it out or saved it anywhere else.

Don't let this happen to you or your friends.
