External USB Drive appears as Hard Disk Drive, I want it to

I just purchased a new LaCie 1TB Rugged USB/Firewire 800 external drive. I have two questions. One anytime I connect this drive to my computer it is showing up as a "Hard Disk Drive" in my computer. I am hoping to have it show up as a removable storage drive. I am hoping to use this as my windows backup location and I wasn't able to have it detect it as a drive without being in the removable storage area.



Second question, in my process of trouble shooting this myself I tried reformatting the drive....... yeah, well it turns out I took its space from 1 TB and reformatted it to 713mb. What should I do to correct this?
