RAID enclosure JBOD is actually RAID 0 what now?

I don't have much experience with RAID arrays. I had been using an ICYDock 4bay drive enclosure which mounted 4 separate logical drives on my computer. I purchased a 4bay Mediasonic Proraid usb3/esata/firewire800 enclosure as the ICYDock just died on me. It said it supported JBOD but I come to find out it's really RAID 0 which takes all my drives and concatenates them to one large logical drive on my desktop.

I have 2x2TB drives where one was a direct mirror of the other through software backups, 1x320GB and 1x300GB drive with separate files no backups. I made sure the most important files are on a 2TB drive so I have piece of mind one drive can die and the other is my backup. What in the world do I do now that I don't have 4x2TB drives to just mirror half the available drive space?

I'm not even sure I'm asking the right questions. I stayed away from RAID arrays due to their complexity. My previous backup system worked fine - I could replace a drive if I needed knowing exactly which drive had what data. I don't see how that's possible now that I don't get 4 logical drives.... Anyone with advice or suggestions?

and just doesn't come that way by default? When I look up the device you posted, I believe it says it can be configured as RAID 0, 1, 3, 5 or 10.

I apologize for writing ambiguously. It most certainly does RAID 1, 3, 5 or 10. My complaint was that JBOD mode was actually RAID 0 or JBOD +spanning. Based on my current method of backups I didn't see a different RAID mode as being useful unless I have matching drives.

the common thinking is that RAID, in any form, isn't a backup plan if that's your goal. You either get performance at the expense of reliability or reliability at the expense of performance. Additional maintenance time comes with either. I've only used RAID 1 but gave it up long ago for backup methods that easier and less time consuming...especially when failure occurs. About all I can suggest is to send it back if it doesn't provide what you want or live with it for what it can do. I'd probably avoid RAID 0 in an external, however.

So far, without fail if you replace a drive in said enclosure the entire "set" must be reinitialized. So you can't swap in a drive and hope some files will survive.

This would be true with any RAID. You back up before you make such changes. Only those that haven't learned this lesson seem to want it not to be true.
