Storage forum: Backing up old PATA hard drives?

I'm basically looking for IDE? Another thing is, I can't see any pictures of inside the Masscool product so I don't know if this is the only product I need? Or do I also need the Adapter cable? Because people are saying that the adapter cable doesn't have a Molex connector so another product is needed for that.

from the word descriptions; This case is compatible with either 2.5/3.5 inch harddrive and it can also be either sata or ide(pata) Hdd. It uses external AC power (which is what you need).

Here's how it is done. You take the drive you have and install it in the case then plug in the power then connect the usb connection to your computer. It should see that harddrive. If not, then check if case require driver or not.

So it connects to a 3.5'', has its own power supply and USB cable and is everything I need? Am I getting that right?

since this is a "new-retail" unit, I am pretty sure they are included. But I get the feeling maybe a knowledgeable friend's help might be a good idea.

About the first link you posted, I can't seem to buy that product. Is that all a package deal or is that multiple things? And which ones do I need? About the second link, I'm looking for IDE? I really want to make sure I get the right thing I need.

You need to check and verify and that's found reviewing the specs of the product. It HAS to say it offers this or that so you can use it. Some of the products out there provide "multiple supplied ports" that can support a wide range of devices, so its not limited. If you need PATA connection then look for PATA or EIDE, plain and simple. Just understand that on top of PATA, there are also some products that support SATA as well, again they explain that. -----Willy

I rechecked that example for the ADA-2020 and see that no "hyperlink" was present. Though, if you google for the product itself other vendors would be provided. The idea was to show an example of a product that can resolve your problem.

Well like I said with someone else on this thread, the cables you initially listed don't seem to come with a power supply (the 4-pin Molex cable), so I wouldn't quite know where exactly to look for that. It really seems like a niche market... not too many choices for people wanting to turn PATA HDD's into external's.

The cable models I listed do come with power supplies and an adapter if you use the SATA connection.

If this is not good enough the buy it at a store. You'll pay a little more but the worry you have will be less.
