SSD vs. mechanical HD

As I've been laptop shopping, with help from the great people on this board I've been able to really start digging into my research.

I've found that a laptop with a SSD adds on a substantial amount of money but for just an everyday computer user - no gaming, graphic editing, etc. - I should be fine with a standard 5400 RPM drive, right?

Here I'm going with Hybrid hard drives since it's a middle ground and the maker has responded that as the flash wears out, it degrades to a plain HDD.

Better long term solution in my opinion.

hybrid drive

Who told you Bob that the flash degrades, has lost touch. If flash degraded over time, why is the flash chip definitly the future of memory. Get a grip and don't listen to over the top info, it's usually wrong, like you are. I love my 750 hybrid and wouldn't trade itr for ant other kind!!!

I'm very lucky to be involved with DVR designs which uses HDDs and more. The question about the hybrid drives came up as the design had to go out about 7 or more years so we needed to know more.

HDD v. SSD

SSD drives do degrade with frequent read/write cycles. I would go with the HDD if I could have only a single drive to do all my work.

SSD drives are EXCELLENT, however, for Windows 7 system disks. The Windoes 8 O/S is very nearly read-only and this is ideal for SSD longevity. In my own computer I have an OCZ Vertex 3 128 GB drive as my system drive and home of my O/S and executables. All the rest -- all my data including my app data, email, libraries and everything else, are on my hard drives.

I get truly startling performance and my SSD is still reporting 100.0% life remaining after nearly a year of use.
