Seagate External hard disk - connected but not visible :(

I have connected my external hard drive (Seagate 320GB) to the system but it is not visible on my computer. The reason I know its connected is because I can see it in the USb Mass storage devices list and the properties say that its working fine.

There shouldn't be a problem with the driver as, I have used it multiple times on the same system.

For me to even recover the data, I need to be able to see the drive. Any thoughts?

But first we save the data BEFORE we do anything such as assign a drive letter.

Thanks for looking into this.
If I am not able to see my external hard drive on the computer, do you think I'll notice it after loading it on Ubuntu?
I believe that the problem is with the drive and not the system.
The reason is that I tried the external hard drive (Seagate) on various systems and it gives the same issue everywhere - visible on the list of devices but not visible as a drive letter on my computer.

Do you still think I should try Ubuntu?

There are folk that must have the absolute sure thing this will work answer. For that we go to http://www.drivesavers.com and pay up.

Here I know to try this first then use the other tools at the top of this forum.

I think Yoda needs to speak next?
