New External Hard Drive Slows Down Computer

I have an HP Pavilion Elite HPE-112y desktop computer running Windows 7. It runs very fast, having 8GB of memory and a quad-core processor. However, my 1TB internal hard drive was full to bursting (about 1-2 GB left, and I download HD movies!) So, I bought an external hard drive (SeaGate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk, 2TB) from Best Buy, plugged it in, and installed the drivers. Now, all of a sudden, my computer has become unbearably slow. Whenever I try to transfer a large file to the EHD, the transfer freezes, and I have to restart my computer. Once, Windows Explorer crashed (only wallpaper on desktop, nothing else), and I had to hard reboot because it got stuck logging off. The second time the transfer froze, my computer blue-screened. Why would simply plugging in an EHD cause all of this to happen and how do I fix it? Even with little disc space left, my computer was running fine before all this.
