Partitioned external drive won't eject in Windows XP! Why?

I just bought a LaCie 1TB USB/Firewire external drive. I'm using Windows XP at home and Macs for some classes and PCs for other classes at school. My plan was to partition the drive, one partition being FAT and the other HFS+ (Mac file system). I installed MacDisc to access the HFS partition at home to back-up my files.
Now, when the drive is partitioned with these two file systems, my system cannot properly eject the drive. Trying to eject freezes things and the only way out is to force a reboot of the computer.
To check, I reformatted the drive to just one HFS partition, getting rid of FAT, and there isn't a problem anymore.
So, finally, here's my question: does XP have an issue ejecting partitioned drives? If yes, is there a way around? I'd prefer to not have to bring two separate drives to school everyday.
Note: I'm working with video, so just formatting to FAT32 won't work due to the file size restriction. Also, these Macs aren't compatible with exFAT, so that's not an option either.
